Interning as a Data Analyst you will:

We are looking for an organized and detail-oriented student to join our Cheminformatics team as a Chemical Registration Intern. This role is a unique opportunity for a candidate with a strong foundation in chemistry to work at the critical intersection of science and information technology. You will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our company's most valuable asset: our corporate chemical compound database.

The intern will act as a key liaison, working closely with our internal scientists and external Contract Research Organizations (CROs) to process and validate bulk chemical registration requests, with a particular focus on the correct representation of complex molecular structures and stereochemistry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and manage incoming compound registration requests submitted by medicinal chemists and CRO partners.
  • Utilize our proprietary in-house chemical registry system to accurately enter and validate new molecular entities.
  • Rigorously review submitted chemical structures for correctness, including proper atom valency, charge, and isotopic labeling.
  • Apply your deep understanding of stereochemistry to ensure the correct digital representation of enantiomers, diastereomers, and geometric isomers (e.g., absolute (R/S) and relative (E/Z) configurations).
  • Apply your knowledge of stereo configurations and mixture of stereoisomers, stereochemistry labelling, geometric isomerism, Fischer and Haworth projection for monosaccharides, cyclic sugars, amino acids and anomers.
  • Use of molecular fingerprints and descriptors for similarity searching as well as conversion between representations.
  • Identify and troubleshoot registration errors, communicating effectively with submitting scientists to resolve any structural discrepancies or ambiguities.
  • Assist in maintaining the overall quality, consistency, and integrity of the corporate chemical database.
  • Contribute to the improvement of registration workflows and documentation.

What should you know / have:

  • Strong academic record with completed coursework in organic and physical, analytical chemistry.
  • Deep theoretical understanding of chemical structures, IUPAC nomenclature, and advanced stereochemical concepts.
  • Proficiency with chemical drawing software (e.g., ChemDraw, MarvinSketch).
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with a diverse scientific community.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with chemical databases, compound registration principles, or data management.
  • Knowledge of chemical structure representation formats (e.g., MOL, SDF, SMILES,InChL, CAS Registry Numbers).
  • Experience with data analysis or scripting (e.g., Python, SQL) is a plus.
