What you need to have to succeed in this role

• Extensive experience of data networks and security design and engineering, preferably acquired in a highly regulated environment. Experience of data gathering from variety of sources including inputs from business, offline spreadsheets, IT systems, etc. Experience of the application of critical thinking and of articualting findings from analysing complex data.  
• Preparation of reports and presentations for consumption by senior audiences. Experience in managing expectations of stakeholders. Experience of providing leadership/guidance to more junior colleagues
• Understanding of data networking principles and industry frameworks. Understanding of risk management fundamentals. Knowledge and experience of delivery using Agile and/or DevOps methodologies. Knowledge and experience of IT service management principles e.g. change control, incident and problem management, resilience and business recovery planning etc
• Detailed understanding of designing, deploying and operating industry leading DDOS mitigation solutions
• Detailed understanding of network design, internet routing, firewall and IDPS technologies
• Detailed understanding of network security threats and risks
• Willingness to continuously learn and share learnings with others. Experience of guiding other colleagues and supporting their development. Proficient with Office Applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Strong customer focus with a drive to deliver standards of service to internal clients at least equivalent to external providers. Able to work with many simultaneous tasks in a pressurized, time-sensitive environment. Able to positively challenge others without having authority or seniority over them. Able to take the lead on projects and engagements and work independently or with minimal guidance from team lead to drive to a successful conclusion

The Principal SME for DDOS Protection is responsible for providing subject matter expertise, thought leadership and supporting project delivery in relation to DDOS Security control issues and initiatives.  The holder of the role should have a focus on Distributed Denial of Service security products, solutions, architecture, and best practices, being able to apply those to the real-world challenges faced by HSBC as the organisation seeks to maintain and improve the network security controls required to mitigate network-based threats and risks.

This role is part of the Network Security function within the Global Defence organisation, providing a Cybersecurity security technology expertise and engineer service to the wider HSBC organisation. This role supports and is supported by the Head of WAAP and DDOS and the Head of Network Security, with the expectation that the Principal SME for DDOS Protection provides technical expertise and SME knowledge to the engagements and projects assigned to them, taking ownership and driving to a successful conclusion, and supports other Cybersecurity or Connectivity Engineering team members providing coaching, guidance and leadership as needed, whilst ensuring the Head of WAAP and DDOS and the Head of Network Security are kept updated on any issues requiring support.
