As part of the Projects & Jobs Management team—the core team behind our Translation Management System—you as a Senior Backend Engineer will become a formative member of a group that powers the heart of how our customers manage their translation work. With your contributions at Phrase, you will ensure that projects, jobs, and workflows run smoothly and reliably, supporting a wide range of file types and customer needs.

Our team's responsibility spans project and job management, workflow steps, custom metadata, email templates, webhooks, parsing of input files, import settings, and resource sharing. Together with fellow Backend & Frontend Engineers, as well as QA and UX colleagues, you will make these essential features more powerful, scalable, and user-friendly—helping customers manage their translation processes with confidence and ease.

What you'll be responsible for:

In this role, you'll not only develop new features but also guide ideas through the full lifecycle—from technical design and implementation to deployment. You'll take ownership of key architectural decisions, mentor and support junior engineers, and help the team continuously raise the bar for quality, performance, and scalability.

Collaboration is central to this role. You'll work closely with frontend developers, QA engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver impactful features in an environment that values autonomy, product thinking, and continuous learning. As a senior engineer, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping both the technical direction and the team's culture.

Knowledge you will benefit from:

• Strong experience developing applications with Java and Spring Boot
• Proven ability to design and maintain production-grade services, balancing technical complexity with real-world business impact.
• Solid understanding of REST architecture and API design best practices
• Hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, as well as messaging and queuing solutions (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ)
• Familiarity with test automation frameworks such as JUnit, Spock and Cypress
• A collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills—comfortable leading discussions, providing feedback, and supporting teammates
• Prior experience working in remote, agile teams with a strong culture of ownership and iteration
