Aerodynamics Engineer

The Development Engineer  is part of the Wheels and Aerodynamics commercial vehicle team and aerodynamics domain of excellence.  This position leads projects related to the development of cutting edge aerodynamic design solutions using state of the art analytical and experimental tools. The Development Engineer will also act as a technical expert representing to support internal Lead Engineering customer teams.  Focus will be on setting problem statements, managing projects and supporting the testing and qualification of turbine and/or compressor stages.  He will be involved in the full life cycle of the turbomachine stage development (targets to qualification) with a focus on optimizing existing design and taking them to production. He will also be involved in the scientific development of the life modeling for turbines and/or compressor. Therefore aerodynamic and structural design experience are required for this position.

Responsibilities:

• Lead, Test and Qualify next generation of turbine and/or compressor aerodynamics
• Develop detailed problem statements with the CV W&A Leader, Performance Engineering team, and Lead Engineering teams to layout a design solution plan, and execute the plan. 
• Work with other engineers to create new required solutions (new wheels, vanes etc) to meet above problem statements weighing up different approaches and risks.
• Focus on proof of concept and final qualification testing for new turbine and/or compressor developments partnering with Lead and development engineers to successfully complete performance and durability testing (gas stand & engine performance tests, Frequency, Light Probe and Killer Testing for HCF).
• Compile design experience across multiple projects, feeding into aerodynamic design standards.  Coordinate with multiple component engineers to ensure standards reflect the full range of experience. 
• Apply Six sigma tools to design a robust product. Interact with the multiple cross-functional teams for new components and concepts integration into the whole turbocharger. 
• Support resolution of technical problem and performance issues at the customer.  Interface with internal customers to provide aero support.
• Initiate and lead broader scopes, cross-Wheels and Aerodynamics and cross-SBU initiatives to drive productivity, knowledge transfer and innovation. 
• Work with Lead, development engineers and Project Managers to keep internal customers updated on project status.
• Work with Materials and Structure & Fatigue domain to improve the component wheel life modeling methodology.

Qualifications:

• Masters degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

•  Good knowledge of at least two of the following disciplines (turbomachinery aero design, Turbocharger product Development, Turbo matching / performance on engine, design / CAD, structures and vibration).

• Experience with the mechanical design challenges of turbine in an automotive turbocharger

•  Testing and analysis skills, advanced analysis tools like CFD, FEA, Matlab are a strong plus

• Design and/or 3D modeling (CATIA or similar) experience would also be a big plus

•  Ability to grasp deep technical issues quickly and relate multiple observations to each other

• Good skills in MS-Office-applications
