Kernel Performance Intern- UDP protocol testing

The Kernel Performance team is seeking a talented and motivated student to help us push the boundaries of Linux kernel network performance. Our current test coverage for TCP throughput is already solid, supported by a dedicated lab equipped with cutting-edge hardware, including 96-core CPUs and a 400 Gbit network switch. Recently, however, we've seen a surge in customer-reported issues related to UDP latency. To address this, we want to expand our capabilities with comprehensive tests for both UDP throughput and—most importantly—UDP latency. You'll do much more than just coding or testing. This role is a perfect launchpad for a career in data science or high-performance computing. You'll gain hands-on experience with state of the art, high performance systems in a real-world lab environment.

Red Hat's Intern Program is a collaborative effort between the Emerging Talent team and our intern managers. This is a paid internship based in our Brno office, typically lasting 12 months, with the possibility to extend up to 24 months. Interns work on average 20 hours per week, with flexible working hours, and the expected start date is February 1st.

What you will do

• Learn and work with our automated performance testing framework.
• Propose an optimal hardware setup for UDP throughput and latency testing.
• Design and implement basic test cases for UDP performance evaluation.
• Execute the test cases on the latest Linux kernels and analyze results.
• (Optional) Run test cases in real-world, customer-relevant scenarios and assist in identifying root causes of ongoing performance issues

What you will bring

• You must be enrolled in a Czech university (Bachelor's 3rd/4th year or Master's) for the full internship duration and be able to work full-time within 2 years.
• Working knowledge of written and spoken English

Candidates should have at least two of the following:

• Experience with any form of automated testing.
• Proficiency in Python, including object-oriented programming.
• Networking knowledge at approximately the CCNA level.
• Practical experience with Linux system administration.
