Technical RPG Expert

Ideal for someone with deep knowledge of RPG who can act as a subject matter expert, supporting architecture decisions, troubleshooting logic conversion, and accelerating the rewrite process.

  • Proven experience in RPG IV / ILE / Free Format development and maintenance is required.
  • Strong ability to analyze and explain RPG logic clearly to teams unfamiliar with the language is necessary.
  • Solid understanding of legacy IBM i environments and their toolchains is required.
  • Prior experience in modernization or migration projects, especially involving RPG-to-Java transitions, is desired.

Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience with Java and object-oriented programming principles is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with SQL and relational database schemas is desirable.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of GitHub or similar source control/collaboration tools is helpful.
  • Understanding of IBM's CloudFirst modernization strategy or related tools is advantageous.

As a Technical RPG Expert, you will work closely with our team to deliver complex projects.

  • Analyze and interpret complex RPG code, explaining business logic and architecture to non-RPG teams.
  • Support modernization initiatives by guiding the migration of RPG applications to Java or other modern platforms.
  • Define and validate strategies for RPG-to-Java transformation.
  • Assist development teams by answering technical questions, validating assumptions, and resolving edge cases during implementation.
  • Collaborate with Java developers, architects, and analysts to ensure business logic is preserved and correctly implemented.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, technical discussions, and documentation activities.
  • Provide technical oversight or hands-on coding support depending on the level of involvement.
  • Successfully migrate core business functionality from RPG to a modern, scalable Java-based architecture.
  • Bridge the gap between legacy IBM i systems and cloud-native solutions.
  • Collaborate in a respectful, expert-driven team environment focused on practical outcomes.
  • Ensure business logic integrity while delivering a clean, maintainable codebase.
  • Accelerate delivery by combining RPG domain knowledge with modern engineering practices.
