Carbon Program Manager

Main purpose of the position
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced (Sr.) CBAM/ Carbon Program Manager to join our Sustainable Procurement team. This role will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to gather CO2 data from suppliers, establish and execute data collection processes for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) including process to verify the collected data, preparing CBAM reporting together with the Trade Compliance team, and support the overall CO2 data collection processes for Scope 3.1. Furthermore, this position will interact directly with suppliers and support them in understanding the requirements and requests. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Scope 3 emissions and supplier engagement. Key responsibilities include:
Supplier CO2 Data Collection
- Develop and implement strategies for collecting CO2 data from suppliers, focusing on data sets needed for overall SBTi/ Decarbonisation targets, but also other projects such as LCA/ Cradle to Cradle (so called Primary data).
- Collecting and verifying CO2 data of suppliers and support suppliers in providing them via training
- Ensure data collection aligns with ISO 14025 and 14067 standards.
- Process and analyse collected CO2 data for various projects such as CBAM, SBTi, LCA etc.
- Implementation (if not already done) and maintenance of respective Carbon tech tools
CBAM Compliance
- Develop processes to meet the 2025 CBAM deadline and beyond.
- Work closely with suppliers, especially non-EU ones, to ensure they understand CBAM requirements and can provide necessary emissions data.
- Refine impact assessments as more supplier-specific data is collected.
- Establish and manage data collection, verification and reporting for CBAM compliance.
- Work closely with the Trade Compliance team to ensure KION stays ahead of global regulations.
- Support in the preparation of mandatory independent verification of CBAM reports.
- Anticipate the expansion of CBAM requirements and prepare for complete visibility into all imports.
SBTi Implementation
- Support the implementation of KION's SBTi reduction roadmap.
- Collaborate with procurement, supply chain, and central sustainability teams to define and implement "blueprints" for specific supplier categories.
- Work towards meeting the 2025 timeline for blueprint completion.
Supplier Engagement
- Develop and implement training and upskilling programs for suppliers on CO2 data collection and reporting.
Internal and External Reporting
- Establish a quarterly reporting system for CO2 data and program progress.
- Prepare and present reports to the Senior Director and other stakeholders as required.
- Tool Management:
- Oversee the use of Assent for data collection and explore potential improvements or alternatives as needed.
Required functional competencies / experience / qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Supply Chain Management, or related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in carbon management, sustainable procurement, or related field.
- Extensive experience with Scope 3 emissions calculation and reporting.
- Proven track record in supplier engagement and data collection strategies.
- In-depth knowledge of CBAM, SBTi, LCA / C2C and other relevant sustainability frameworks and regulations.
- Experience with ISO 14025, 14067, and other relevant standards.
- Familiarity with LCA and C2C certification processes.
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data management tools.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
